What is a Bunion?
A bunion is an enlargement of the joint at the base of the big toe–the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint- that forms when the bone or tissue at the big toe joint moves out of place. This forces the toe to bend towards the other toes (medically termed halluz valgus deformity), causing a painful lump of bone on the side of the foot. Since this joint carries a lot of the body's weight while walking, bunions can cause severe pain. The MTP joint itself may become stiff and sore, making even the wearing of shoes difficult or impossible. A small fluid filled sac adjacent to the joint can also become inflamed, leading to additional swelling and pain. A less common bunion is located on the outside of the foot along the little toe, this is a called a "bunionette".
Bunion Symptoms
Bunions are mainly a hereditary condition and will worsen with time if left untreated. Although bunions can affect anyone, they are most common among older individuals and women. One of the first bunion symptoms is extreme foot pain when walking or wearing shoes. A bunion causes an enlargement of the base of the big toe and is associated with positioning the big toe toward the smaller toes. This eventually leads to chronic pain at the base of the big toe.

Bunion Treatment
Bunions and other deformities of the foot can be permanently corrected with surgery. Results are best if the problem is addressed before it is able to grow worse and affect the entire foot. Bunion surgery will remove the bony enlargement of the toe joint and relieve pain. A simple bunionectomy is used for less severe cases to remove only the bony prominence. Severe bunions require a more involved procedure which includes cutting the bone and realigning the joint. Bunions can affect overall health in a negative way and should be eliminated as soon as possible.
